Discussion:
IE toolbar button color mismatch
(too old to reply)

Hello. I want to add a toolbar button to Internet Explorer
using the appropriate Registry entries under the
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inernet Explorer\Extensions\{MY-
GUID} key. The only problem is that the particular image
(ICO file) I'm using and which is specified in the HotIcon
entry, some of the colors are not being displayed properly
(yellow instead of orange). I imagine that somehow the
color palette being used by my ICO file does not match the
one being employed by IE for the toolbar. I'm just using
what I think is just some standard/default 256 color
palette given to me by my icon editor. Any insight would
be appreciated. Thanks, David.

Hi David,

Thank you for posting in MSDN managed newsgroup!

From my understanding to this issue, the ie toolbar icon you has set is
displayed not very correctly. Some color of the icon is showed in another.

Based on my experience, there will be two causes for this issue.
1.) If the icon resource does not have the proper size to display in the
toolbar, the shell will "mash" whatever size is in there into the
appropriate space. This can cause smearing, shearing and pixilation,
depending on which way you are going.

2) If the icon's color depth is higher than what the shell can currently
support, the shell will dither and reduce the colors to display the icon
graphic.

I'd suggest you can create a quick shortcut on the desktop and use the .ico
for the shortcut and see if the color issue is present there too. If so,
its probably one of the above.

If the issue remains, I'd suggest you can tell me more information
regarding this issue, the OS and IE version, the current color depth of the
display, and maybe even the icon itself (you'd better give me a screenshot
too). It will be appreciated you can zip them into one package and send it
to me or attach it in this thread.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further questions.

Hello Wei-Dong. Thanks for your quick response. Yes, I
just realized that my IE was configured to display small
icons. Configuring it to display larger icons fixes the
problem, the colors are fine. I'm a little surprised that
it would change this color since it comprises a large-ish
background area of the icon, but I guess that's what's
happening.

So I believe I need to create an ICO file which contains
two versions of the image, my normal/large 32x32 image and
a smaller 16x16 version (these are both 256 colors, BTW).
I have done this, but I'm still seeing the problem. It
maybe that I haven't done this correctly (I'm not a ICO
editor expert), or maybe 16x16 is not the correct
alternate size? Any ideas?

(BTW, FYI, I'm running Win2000 server, IE 6.0.2800.1106,
32-bit (true)color display).

Thanks, David.

Hi

I had this problem too and finally tried using standard 16 color pallette and I got the colors I started with. I created two 32x32 icons one in 16 colors standard and one in 16 colors greyscale (one in each .ico file). This was after wrestling with all the spec's given in the toolbar design standards document. I chucked the document ;
